Yippee Pt. 2

“To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” Revelation 3:21

The promises and the hopes keep getting better and better; if we “overcome”, we are told that we will be allowed to sit with the Messiah/Jesus, on His heavenly throne. Wow! I’m scratching my head and trying to figure out, just why He would love me so much that He would allow me such an honor – to sit on His throne. When someone speaks of a throne, he/she is referring to royalty; only royalty sits on thrones – not peons like me. 

However, to get to that part, one must “overcome”. Overcome what? We are to overcome our sinful, selfish natures. We are to become like Christ, in that, as we open our hearts to Him, He will show us a better way to live and will put within us virtues worthy of heavenly company.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…” Galatians 5:21-23

As a matter of fact, the most rehearsed sermon or message given by Jesus, points out to those who are willing to be saved, the kind of things He is willing to perform, on our behalf. The message is called, “The Beatitudes.”

“And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:  And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.  Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” Matthew 5:1-12

The word “blessed” is best translated as happy. Jesus is seeking to brighten the heart and hopes of those who appear to be the most cast out. He is seeking to show them how to overcome by attributing these attitudes. To do so, would be to adopt the “mind of Christ”. Philippians 2:5  Hence, we become “overcomers”.

Here are the last two items mentioned in the opening scripture:

1.     Jesus overcame the world and was victorious over it. Matthew 4:1-10; Hebrews 4:15; John 8:48

2.     Jesus sat down next to the Father, after he was resurrected – Hebrews 1:1-3
